Day 1 Recaps from the USCAA Small College World Series

FINAL SCORE: #8 Cleary University 7, #9 Penn State Beaver 6

RECORDS: Cleary University (19-25) | Penn State Beaver (19-20)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF: The Cleary Cougars were able to capitalize with runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Penn State Beaver 7-6. Joel Ledford’s two run RBI and a sacrifice fly by Luke Bunting allowed Cleary to get three runs across the plate, including what would prove to be the game-winning run.

HOW THEY SCORED: Penn State Beaver opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st inning with Nick Casasanta’s single which advanced Jake Debo and allowed Tyler Thellman to score. Cleary had a double steal in the bottom of the 1st when Briton Ott stole second base which provided the distraction needed to allow Nick Hoogerhyde to steal home.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Debo hit a double allowing Duncan Miklos to score an unearned run. Stephen Antolic of Beaver followed that double with one of his own scoring Debo. Cleary came back in the bottom of the inning on a fielder’s choice.  Cleary then took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the 3rd when John Grable singled and Mickey Monpas was able score from second.

Beaver in the top of the 6th was able to score three runs and take the lead on several Cleary mistakes. With the bases loaded, Derek Bozic walked allowing Thellman to score from third. The next batter, Matt Capo was hit by a pitch on the wrist allowing another run to score. Shawn Shaner singled to score Antolic for the third run of the inning. Cleary would not go down without a fight as Ledford hit a two run single to tie the game at 6-6. Bunting hit a sacrifice fly to score what would be the winning run.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: In the first inning, Penn State Beaver scored one run on their five hits while Cleary scored one run on their lone hit. Thellman led Penn State Beaver with three hits followed by four players with two hits each. Debo, Antolic, Casasanta, Bozic, Capo, and Shaner all had one RBI for Penn State Beaver.

Cleary was led by the two RBI’s and three hits of right fielder Ledford. Jack Ropp pitched 4.2 inning and allowed three earned runs and struck out three in the process, walking only one. Tyler Vaughn came in for the last 1 and 2/3 innings surrendering no runs to close out the game.

NEXT UP: Cleary advances in the winners bracket to face the host, College of St. Joseph’s Vermont tonight at 6:30 pm EST. Penn State Beaver is still alive in the tournament but moves to the loser’s bracket. They will face the loser of the #2 Rochester College vs #7 Penn State DuBois game tomorrow at 11:00 am.

RECORDS: Rochester College (23-20) | Penn State DuBois (21-14)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF: The Rochester College Warriors defeated Penn State DuBois 2-0 to advance to the second round of the USCAA Small College World Series.

HOW THEY SCORED: Eric Mischley of Rochester scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Tyler Provow grounded into a double play. In the bottom of the 4th inning Mischley reached on a fielder’s choice which advanced Chad Cook to third and allowed Jacob Pachoiski to score from third.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Jesse Rometty of Rochester College pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and gave up just five hits and struck out seven in the process. Cook had two hits for the Warriors which was a game-high. Mischley, Provow, and Dominic Raona each added a hit to give Rochester five in the game. Penn State DuBois had five players with one hit each. Pitcher, Anthony Caruso went 3 and 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run.

NEXT UP: Rochester College advances to play the winner of #3 University Cincinnati Clermont and #6 Wright State Lake Campus on Tuesday, at 1:30 pm EST. Penn State DuBois will move to the elimination bracket and play Penn State Beaver to try and keep their national championship hopes alive. 




FINAL SCORE: #3 University of Cincinnati Clermont 6, #6 Wright State Lake Campus 1

RECORDS: UC Clermont (21-20) | Wright State (13-26)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF: After trailing 1-0 into the third inning, UC Clermont put up a four spot in the bottom of the third.  They added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that’s all they would need as they defeated Wright State 6-1 in the opening round of the 2016 Small College World Series.

HOW THEY SCORED: Wright State opened the scoring in the top of the second.  After a Jacob Armstrong walk, Storm Wolter singled putting runners on first and second with no outs.  Jared Knous (who pinch ran for Armstrong) scored after two fielder’s choice plays for the Lakers. 

UC Clermont opened their scoring in the bottom of the third with a solo home run from Jake Murray.  Clermont followed that up with three more runs off a single from Anthony Bell, back to back doubles from Spencer Henn and Cody Riley, and a single from Jacob Beinke.  The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, with an Anthony Bell solo home run and a Beinke double that scored Spencer Henn.

FINAL SCORE: #1 College of St. Joseph’s Vermont 10, #8 Cleary University 1

RECORDS: College of St. Joseph’s Vermont (48-11) | Cleary University (19-25)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF: The College of St. Joseph’s Vermont Fighting Saints defeated the Cleary University Cougars 10-1 to advance to the second round the USCAA Small College World Series.

HOW THEY SCORED: Tyler Kunzmann doubled to centerfield to send Connor Martin home for the opening run of the game for the Fighting Saints. Later in the game, Kunzmann tallied another RBI from a single and scored Teddy Mercado.

Cleary got on the board in the top of the 4th when John Grable singled which advanced Luke Bunting and scored Cameron Ciaiuch.

In the bottom of the 4th the Fighting Saints built upon their lead as Jared Morello singled to advance Jared Morello and score Nick Rodriguez. Morello was able to score on a Connor Martin double. Tyler Kunzmann hit a single to score Teddy Mercado.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Player of the Year, Alan Madsen, pitched a complete game and struck out three. He surrendered five hits but only the one earned run. Tyler Kunzmann scored three RBIs on three hits to lead the Fighting Saints. Nestor Velazquez and Tyler Demers each added two RBIs.

Cleary had five players with hits and John Grable had the lone RBI for the Cougars.

NEXT UP: College of St. Joseph’s Vermont will play Robert Morris University – Peoria tomorrow at 4:00 pm EST. Cleary is still in the running in the national championship but they move to the loser’s bracket and will face the Apprentice School at 9:00 pm EST.
