Day Two Recaps From the USCAA Baseball National Championship

FINAL SCORE: #9 Penn State Beaver 3, #7 Penn State DuBois 4

RECORDS: Penn State Beaver (19-21) | Penn State DuBois (22-14)

LOCATION: East Field Park, Glens Falls, New York

IN BRIEF: Penn State DuBois was able to hold on to their lead in the top of the 7th inning to defeat Penn State Beaver 4-3 in the first elimination game of the 2016 USCAA Small College World Series.

HOW THEY SCORED:  Penn State Beaver got the day going with the bases loaded in the top of the 1st inning as Blaise McCarty singled to advance all the runners and score Jake Debo from third. In the bottom of the 2nd inning Colton Treaster singled scoring Josh Sorbera. Alessandro Marotto followed that up with a double to score Treaster as Penn State DuBois took the 2-1 lead.

With the bases loaded Beaver's McCarty got his second single and second RBI of the of the game when he singled to score Debo from third and advance all the runners. Matt Capo earned an RBI of his own on a ground out to the shortstop which scored Alex Hart. DuBois got what would prove to be the winning-run in the bottom of the 5th inning when Clayton Butler stole second allowing Alex Hart to take home on the pass ball.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Brandon Getting had two hits for DuBois on his three trips to the plate, including an RBI. Dan Bowman pitched four and a thirds inning coming out of the bullpen. He struck out three and surrendered no hits to Beaver.

Penn State Beaver's Debo was 2-4 at the plate and McCarty was 2-3 with two RBIs. Nick Casasnata pitched four innings and gave up four earned runs and struck out four batters.

NEXT UP: Penn State DuBois will face Wright State – Lake Campus today at 6:30 pm EST in an elimination game. The winner will survive another day and play Wednesday at 9:30 am EST. Penn State Beaver leaves Glens Falls after today's loss. They finish the season 19-21 and PSUAC Conference Champions. 




FINAL SCORE: #2 Rochester College 4, #3 University of Cincinnati Clermont 2

RECORDS: Rochester College (24-20) | University of Cincinnati Clermont (22-21)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, New York

IN BRIEF: The Rochester College Warriors defeated the University of Cincinnati Clermont Cougars 4-2 in the first game of the day in the winner's bracket. Jacob Pachoiski and Chad Cook each had two RBIs for Rochester.

HOW THEY SCORED: Pachoiski grounded out to the shortstop but Ricky Riggs was able to score the unearned run in the bottom of the 2nd inning for Rochester.

In the top of the 4th inning, the Cougar's Colt Cordey doubled into the gap and scored Nick King. Cordey would later score on a Jake Murray single.

Rochester would add two more runs in the bottom of the 4th when Pachoiski grounded out to first, scoring Ricky Riggs from third.  Cook followed that up with a single, scoring David Quartucci and Benjamin Miezki.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Brandon Boyd pitched a complete game and gave up only three earned runs, striking out seven. Jake Murray was 2-4 at the plate, with an RBI

Rochester's Pachoiski and Cook each had two RBIs and combined for the team's three hits in the game. Daniel Monear pitched five and two thirds innings and allowed no earned runs on six hits and one strikeout. Mike Berlin earned the save and struck out one batter in his lone inning pitched.

NEXT UP: Rochester College moves on in the winner's bracket to face the winner of the College of St. Joseph's Vermont and Robert Morris University Peoria, Wednesday at 2:00 pm EST. UC Clermont moves to the elimination bracket and will play the winner of the Wright State – Lake Campus and Penn State DuBois game, which takes place Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm EST. 




FINAL SCORE: #1 College of St. Joseph's Vermont 2, #5 Robert Morris University – Peoria 1

RECORDS: College of St. Joseph's Vermont (50-11) | Robert Morris University –Peoria (15-16)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, New York

IN BRIEF: The top ranked College of St. Joseph's Vermont Fighting Saints defeated the fifth seeded Robert Morris University – Peoria Eagles 2-1 to advance to the semifinals of the USCAA Small College World Series.

HOW THEY SCORED: In the bottom of the 1st inning, Connor Martin hit a sacrifice fly to score Nick Rodriguez.  In the third inning, Jared Morello singled to bring home Rodriguez as the Fighting Saint took a 2-0 led.

In the top of the 7th, Stephens hit a double into the gap to get on base with one away. Dietz stepped up to the plate as the tying run. His single brought around Stephens from second base to make the score 2-1. The Eagles put a man in scoring position after a stolen base and a wild pitch, but left the tying run on third after a stolen base and wild pitch.  

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Bill Brancatella pitched a full game for the Fighting Saints. He struck out 10 batters and gave up one earned run on four hits. Morello and Martin each had an RBI on their two trips to the plate.

Eagles right fielder, Dietz was 2-3 at the plate with the lone RBI for his team. Miah Atchley pitched a full-game, struck out three and allowed just two earned runs.

NEXT UP: The College of St. Joseph's Vermont remains in the winner's bracket and will face the seconded seeded team in the tournament, the Rochester College Warriors. Robert Morris will face the winner of the Apprentice School and Cleary University in an elimination game.


FINAL SCORE: #7 Penn State DuBois 3, #6 Wright State Lake Campus 2

RECORDS: UC Clermont (22-21) | Wright State (13-28)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF: After trailing 1-0 into the first inning, Penn State DuBois put up a three spot in the fourth inning.  Wright State got back one in the bottom of the fourth, but it wouldn't be enough as the Lions win 3-2 to move on in the 2016 Small College World Series.

HOW THEY SCORED: Wright State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first.  After a D. Bell was hit by a pitch and T. Venters walked, Dakota Waterman advanced runners to second and third on a bunt.  I. Fitzgeral grounded out to shortstop, scoring Bell.

Penn State DuBois scored each of their three runs in the fourth inning.  The rally began with singles by Dan Bowman and Brandon Gettig.  Anthony Caruso reached on a fielder's choice, and Bowman scored an unearned run after an error at short.  Nick McGhee pinch ran for Caruso and scored following a single by Clayton Butler, a walk by Josh Sorbera, and a Zac Walsh two-RBI single which also pushed across Austin Amacher who pinch ran for Butler.

Wright State Lake Campus brought the game to within one run in the bottom of the fourth.  Connor Burr walked and advanced to second base on a passed ball.  After stealing third base, Burr scored on a Ronaldo Acosta single.  The Lakers of Wright State would leave a lone runner on base in the fifth and sixth innings, but got no closer to tying the game as Penn State DuBois advanced with the 3-2 win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Penn State DuBois was led offensively by left fielder Clayton Butler who was 2-3 and pinch hitter Zac Walsh who had two RBI in his lone at bat.  Alex Hart for DuBois was tough to hit, allowing only four hits, but gave up five walks.  Wright State Lake's four hits came from four different players (Bell, Becker, Burr, and Acosta). 

NEXT UP: Penn State DuBois advances in the elimination bracket to face UC Clermont at 9:00am EST.  Wright State Lake is eliminated from the 2016 Small College World Series after a competitive season.
