Baseball National Championship: Day 1 Recaps

#3 Penn State Greater Allegheny 2, #6 St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) 7

#6 St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny by a score of 7-2 to earn the first upset victory in the 2014 Small College World Series to advance to the winner’s bracket.

The Bears took advantage of six Penn State Greater Allegheny errors, five of which came in the 5th and 6th innings and led to five St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) unearned runs.   USCAA second team All-American, Chris Cutrone, pitched a complete game for the Bears, striking out seven Lions’ batters.  For the Bears, USCAA second team All-American Joseph Mendez, and catcher Domenick Camerada both hit solo home runs to lead the Bears to the win.

St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) will now face the winner of the #2 Lindenwood University-Belleville/#7 Selma University on May 13th at Chamberlain Park at 4:00 pm, while Penn State Greater Allegheny moves goes to the loser’s bracket to face host Robert Morris University-Springfield at Chamberlain Park at 11:00am on May 13th at 9:00pm.




#1 University of Cincinnati-Clermont 4, #8 Victory University 2

#1 The University of Cincinnati-Clermont Cougars moves one step closer to back to back championships by defeating the #8 Eagles of Victory University by the score of 4-2.

Coming off of a win earlier today, the Eagles were looking for the first upset of the 2014 Small College World Series. In the third inning, Shortstop Mark Kelley scored for the Eagles off of a Kent Voorhies single to left field, however the Cougars would score two runs the very next inning on a throwing error by the Eagles’ Myles Holliman.  The Cougars would go on to add insurance runs in 5th and 6th on a sacrifice fly by second basemen Jake Scarlato and off a Dayton Rausch single to right field.

For the Cougars, first basemen Ryan Mummert went 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI, while Jordan Mobley went 2 for 3 at the plate and scored a run for the Eagles.

The University of Cincinnati-Clermont advances to the winner’s bracket to face #4 The Apprentice School Builders on Tuesday, May 13th at Chamberlain Park at 1:30pm. Victory University moves onto the loser’s bracket to face the winner of #5 Briarcliffe College/#9 Rochester College at Chamberlain Park at 6:30pm on Tuesday, May 13th.


#4 The Apprentice School 3, #5 Briarcliffe College 2

The Builders of The Apprentice School complete a late 6th inning rally to defeat #5 Briarcliffe College, 3-2, to advance into the winner’s bracket of the 2014 Small College World Series.

The Briarcliffe College Bulldogs started off quickly by capitalizing off a Builders’ error to score one run in the first inning. Leading 2-1 in the 6th inning, starting pitcher Ben Wright threw two wild pitches that allowed two Builder runners to advance into scoring position. Before the Briarcliffe College coaching staff was able to make a pitching change, Lee Rossi of The Apprentice School ripped a 2-run single up the middle, which turned out to be the game winning runs.

Shortstop Brandon Fischer and second basemen Gus Mejia drove in the two runs for Briarcliffe College. 

The Apprentice School will now face the winner of #1 University of Cincinnati-Clermont/#8 Victory University at Chamberlain Park, May 13th at 1:30pm.  Briarcliffe College moves to the loser’s bracket to face #9 Rochester College at Chamberlain Park at 8:30am.


#7 Selma University 5, #10 Robert Morris University-Springfield 2

In the second game of the Small College World Series, #7 Selma University defeated #10 and host, Robert Morris University-Springfield, 5-2.  Selma was able to come back after falling behind 2-0 in the second inning to avoid the upset.

Selma took advantage of two costly errors made by the Eagles to tie the game at 2 after the third inning.  The Bulldogs would then take the lead for good in the next inning after taking advantage of another throwing error made by the Eagles.  Tarus Hervey pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs and struck out 10 batters while only giving up five hits. Robert Morris University-Springfield’s Zach Redpath led the way for the Eagles as he recorded the only RBI for his team.

#7 Selma University advances to the winner’s bracket to face #2 Lindenwood University-Belleville tonight at Robin Roberts Stadium at 9:00pm.  Robert Morris University-Springfield heads to the losers bracket where they will face the loser of the #3 Penn State Greater Allegheny #6 St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) game tomorrow at Chamberlain Park at 11:00am.


#8 Victory University 12, #9 Rochester College 2

In the opening game of the 2014 USCAA Baseball Small College World Series, eighth seeded Victory University defeated ninth seeded Rochester College by a score of 12-2.

The Eagles of Victory University used 10 hits from seven different batters to take early control of the ball game. First basemen Kevin Voorhies, third basemen Holden Watts, and left fielder Jordan Mobley each recorded two hits and two RBIs to lead the way for the Eagles.

The top performer for Rochester College was shortstop, Chaz Hill, who crushed a solo home run to left field in the top of the second to cut into the Eagles lead, but it was the last run the Warriors would score.  Third basemen, Nick Tomilenko, also had a hot bat for the Warriors as he went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Victory now moves onto face number one seed, University of Cincinnati-Clermont, later on today, May 12th at Robin Roberts Stadium at 4:00pm, while Rochester College moves to the consolation bracket to face the winner of the #4 The Apprentice School/#5 Briarcliffe College on Tuesday, May 13th at 8:30am at Chamberlain Park.
