2017 USCAA Baseball Small College World Series Day 2 Recaps

FINAL SCORE: #5 Cleary University 7, #9 Central Penn College 3 

RECORDS: Cleary University (26-15) | Central Penn College (14-16)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF:  Central Penn rallied in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Cleary University’s seven runs.  Cleary wins 7-3 and moves on to play Bluefield State in the elimination bracket quarterfinals. 

HOW THEY SCORED: In the bottom of the 1st inning, John Grable and Reid Beffrey each singled, putting runners on first and second. Grable stole third and a Jordan Hadley single brought Grable home to open the scoring at 1-0 in favor of Cleary. 

Nick Hoogerhyde singled to open the third inning for the Cougars, then stole second to get into scoring position. Beffrey stepped up with a single to advance Hoogerhyde to third. He was brought in on a sac fly to right field by Hadley. Beffrey stole second and John Malbone was walked to put two men on base. Mickey Montpas singled then advanced all the way to third on an error, bringing both runners home to make it 4-0.

UC Clermont added a run in the bottom of the fourth behind a Grable sacrifice fly.  Hoogerhyde added two more for the Cougars as he went deep in the bottom of the 6th with Bunting on base, extending the lead to 7-0.

Central Penn College got on the board in the top of the 7th after Jerry Biller III started the inning with a single. The next batter, Cook, doubled to advance Biller to third who was able to score on an error. Woodward was walked before Biller scored and Woodward advanced to second on another error. The final run of the game was Woodward coming around home after stealing third advancing on the third error of the inning by the Cougars.
 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Payton Tyndall started on the mound for the Cougars and pitched five perfect innings. He allowed his first hit in the sixth after already striking out nine batters and issuing no walks. 

For Cleary, Hoogerhyde, Grable, Beffery, Nowicki, and Malbone each had a stolen base. Hoogerhyde had two RBIs thanks to his two run shot in the bottom of the 6th and was 3-4 in his plate appearances. 

Todd Cook had the lone extra base hit for Central Penn. Cook also went 3.1 innings allowing four earned runs, and striking out six batters in the process. 

NEXT UP: Cleary University advances in the elimination bracket to play the #8 seeded Bluefield State College this evening at 6:30pm.  Central Penn exits the tournament after an outstanding season and their first Small College World Series appearance.

 


 

FINAL SCORE: #1 University of Cincinnati-Clermont 0, #4 Apprentice School 2

RECORDS: University of Cincinnati Clermont (26-16) | Apprentice School (28-16)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY 

IN BRIEF: The Apprentice School Builders upset the #1 seeded UC Clermont Cougars 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the USCAA Small College World Series. 

HOW THEY SCORED: In the top of the third, Dalton Dye doubled to start the inning and Thomas Richardson followed with a single advancing Dye to third. Jacob Countiss stepped into the batter’s box with both men on and hit a sac fly to right field. The right fielder had a good jump on the play and made an accurate throw to the plate, but Dye was able to slide under the tag.

In the top of the 7th inning Richardson drew a walk to get on base.  Countiss found himself at the plate again with a man on and knocked a single into the gap. Richardson advanced all the way to third on the error with just one out away. The pitcher Robbie Watkins flew out to centerfield allowing Richardson to tag up and score the second run of the game for the Builders.   

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: The USCAA Player of the Year, Robbie Watkins went the distance striking out 11 batters on his 28 faced. He surrendered six hits over the game but gave up no walks. 

Clermont’s pitcher, Grant Christman, went the distance allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts and a walk. Right fielder Nick King was 2-3 at the plate and the only Clermont player with multiple hits in the game.

NEXT UP: The Apprentice School moves along in the winners’ bracket and will play the winner of the College of St, Joseph’s and Penn State DuBois game, on Wednesday, May 17th in the semi-finals. UC Clermont is still alive but moves to the elimination bracket and will match up against the winner of Marygrove and Wright State –Lake Campus. 

 


 

FINAL SCORE: #3 Wright State Lake Campus 8, #7 Penn State Mont Alto 7

RECORDS: Wright State Lake Campus (26-17) | Penn State Mont Alto (14-24-1)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF:  Wright Field State Lake Campus advances in the elimination bracket after defeating Penn State Mont 8-7. 

HOW THEY SCORED: In the bottom of the first inning, Wright State’s Dustin Lewis singled, but an errant throw allowed him to reach second.  Tristian Becker was next up in the lineup and singled bringing home Lewis to make it 2-0 on the evening.

Penn State Mont Alto came back in the top of the third as Matt Taylor reached first on an error by the shortstop. A grounder advanced Taylor to second but put two outs on the board in the process. Jeremiah Younker tallied his fist RBI of the game after he singled scoring an unearned run as Taylor made it around to home from second. In a play resulting in two errors by Wright State, Brady Topper reached and advanced to second. The second error brought Younker from second all the way around to score, tying the game up at 2-2 through the top of the third. 

Wright State regained the lead in the bottom of the inning after Billy Lanham was walked and then stole second. Ronaldo Acosta singled to the gap, advancing Lanham to third with just one out. Acosta then stole second to get into scoring position but an errant throw moved him to third and scored Lanham on an unearned run. The next batter Dakota Shatto-Craft had a base hit to score Acosta. Lewis had a double with three men on, scoring two.

During the top of the fourth inning Mont Alto got a run back when Colby Black singled scoring Spencer Meyers from third. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning Chandler Craine of the Lakers singled, but another error gave him the opportunity to move ahead a base, scoring Lanham who was walked earlier in the inning. 

Mont Alto scored four runs in the fifth inning starting with Martin reaching first on an error. Younker stepped up and hit a triple to bring Martin home for the score. Topper followed Younker’s triple with a base hit for another run scored. Cory Chatfield reached on a fielder’s choice and Landon Richards was advanced to third on the play Joel Claubaugh and Topper came around to score and tie the game at 7-7. 

In the bottom of the sixth Wright State’s Fitzgerald reached first on an error. Landham knocked another base hit and advanced the runner to scoring position on second. Acosta capitalized on the opportunity late in the game with a RBI base hit in what proved to be the winning run for the Lakers.   

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Younker and Clabaugh were the only two Mont Alto players with a multi-hit game.  However, four other players notched a hit in the contest. Younker was 4-4 at the plate today and brought in two RBIs. Topper and Chatfield each added two RBIs. Lowell Singer went 3.1 innings allowing four hits and just one earned run. 

Dustin Lewis had three RBIs in the game for Mont Alto with his double into the gap in the third inning notching two. Ronaldo Acosta was 2-3 with an RBI and a walk. Tristan Becker, Chad Anders, Billy Lanman, Acosta, and Craine each had a stolen base in the game. The Lakers from Wright State left nine men on base and struck out four times in the game. The game saw 17 hits but only two extra base hits with one from each team.

NEXT UP: Wright State advances in the elimination bracket to play tonight at 9:00 pm against 10th seeded Marygrove College. Penn State Monto Alto exits the tournament after a season where they prevailed as the Penn State University Athletic Conference champion. 

 


FINAL SCORE: #2 College of St. Joseph’s (VT) 3, #6 Penn State DuBois 2

RECORDS: College of St. Joseph’s VT (25-21) | Penn State DuBois (22-13)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY

IN BRIEF: The College of St. Joseph’s Vermont advance after defeating the sixth seeded Penn State DuBois 3-2.

HOW THEY SCORED:  Penn State DuBois opened the scoring in the top of the first inning.  With one out, Lance Pennington walked and advanced to third on a Talon Falls single.  USCAA All-American Brandon Gettig singled to knock in the run. 

College of St. Joseph’s Vermont matched the Lions in stride in the bottom of the first, behind the bats of John Loschiavo and Tyler Kunzmann.  Loschiavo led off the inning with a single, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Kunzmann drove him in with an RBI single between third and short.

The Fighting Saints broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning without recording a hit.  Derek Edge led off the inning by reaching first on a tough hopper to the shortstop, ruled an error.  Nick Rodriguez bunted on the next play and made it to first on an error by the first-baseman, placing runners at first and second.  Loschiavo came up to bunt again and reached second on an errant throw by the pitcher, scoring both runs.  The Saints would not score again in the ballgame. 

Penn State DuBois pulled within one in the top of the fourth.  With two outs, Jakob Felix doubled.  Josh Sorbera grounded to third, but an error by the first-baseman allowed Sorbera to second and Felix to score, reducing the Saints lead to 3-2.

Penn State DuBois had baserunners in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but were unable to produce another run, giving defending National Championship College of St. Joseph’s a trip to the winner’s bracket final on Wednesday. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: College of St. Joseph’s VT pitcher Russ Krebs went 6 and 1/3 inning, allowing just one earned run, striking out five, and walking two batters.  Alex Hart went the distance (6 innings) for Penn State DuBois, allowing only one earned run as well on six hits.

John Loschiavo was the only Saints player with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs.  Fighting Saint’s catcher Mauricio Rondon was perfect in throwing out Lions attempting to steal in the game.

NEXT UP: College of St. Joseph’s VT moves on to the semi-finals of the USCAA Small College World Series and will play the 2015 National Champion, the Apprentice School at 1:00pm EST on Wednesday. Penn State DuBois moves to the elimination bracket and play the winner of Bluefield State College and Cleary University at 9:00am EST on Wednesday.

 


 

FINAL SCORE: #8 Bluefield State College 9, #5 Cleary University 10 

RECORDS: Bluefield State College (13-34) | Cleary University (21-29-1)

LOCATION: East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY 

IN BRIEF:  Cleary University extended their chance at a national title, defeating Bluefield State College 9-8 on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning.    

HOW THEY SCORED: Bluefield State College took an early lead in the top of the first inning behind the bats of Justin Bowler, Sam Harris, and Logan Wriston.  Each singled before Peyton Durham was hit by a pitch to score the first run of the game.  Chaz Rutherford hit a sacrifice fly to score Harris for the 2-0 lead. 

Cleary took back the lead in the bottom of the second scoring three runs on one hit and an error.  Mickey Montpas had the only hit of the inning with one out, a single.  Briton Ott was hit by a pitch, and runners advanced to second and third on a throwing error by the pitcher during a fielder’s choice play that loaded the bases.  After the second out, Nick Hoogerhyde walked to score the first run and both Ott and William Lovell scored on wild pitches. 

Bluefield State College jumped back out in front in the bottom of the third.  Drew D’Angelo singled to start the inning and was advanced to second on a Bowler walk.  Harris then singled to load the bases.  Wriston hit a sacrifice fly to center for his first RBI of the game.  Durham followed with an RBI single, then Chase Chambers singled to load the bases again for the Big Blues.  Billy O’Hara was then hit to score another run.  Blocker doubled to the gap to score the fourth and fifth runs of the inning for Bluefield, putting them up 7-3. 

Cleary got two back in the bottom of the third on singles from Jordan Hadley, Malbone, and Motpas.  Lovell singled for another RBI, making the score 5-3 before Bluefield State added another run in the top of the inning on a Chambers RBI single.  Cleary took the run back in the bottom half of the inning on hits from Hoogerhyde and Hadley (RBI). 

Down 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth, Cleary began a miraculous two out rally.  After a strike-out and fly-out, Lovell walked, Jordan Leyder was hit by a pitch, and Hoogerhyde walked to load the bases.  Grable singled to clear the bases on a close play at home as Cleary took a one run lead going into the sixth inning.

After a scoreless sixth, Bluefield State entered the final inning still down a run.  Chambers began the inning reaching first on an error by the third baseman.  T.J. Sauers pinch ran for Chambers and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Cleary would retire the next two batters, only to give up the tying run on a D’Angelo RBI single in the right-centerfield gap.  

The excitement extended to the bottom of the seventh inning as Bunting reached first on an error by the shortstop.  Hoogerhyde doubled to advance Bunting to third.  Then, with one out Grable laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that trickled into the glove of relief pitcher Brandon Wortkoetter.  Wortkoetter flipped the ball to the plate as O’Hara attempted to block Bunting, but he was called safe at the play at the plate, advancing the Cougars into Wednesday at the Small College World Series. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: John Grable was only 1 for 1 for the Cougars, but still drove in half of the Cougars ten runs with his three walks. Bluefield State only allowed six earned runs in the game. 

NEXT UP: Wright State advances in the elimination bracket to play tonight at 9:00 pm against 10th seeded Marygrove College. Penn State Monto Alto exits the tournament after a season where they prevailed as the Penn State University Athletic Conference champion.
