IN BRIEF: #2 Penn State Greater Allegheny Nittany Lions used a five run 4th inning to defeat #7 University of Cincinnati-Clermont Cougars by a score of 11-8 to advance in the 2015 USCAA Small College World Series

HOW THEY SCORED:

  • In the bottom of the first, Clay Groff scored off of Troy Ambros double to left field. Two batters later, Joshua Arroyo was hit by a pitch to force Aaron McGee to home plate to make it 2-0 Nittany Lions. Later in the inning, Mark Hollis was also hit by a pitch to bring in another run for the Nittany Lions for a 3-0 early advantage.
  • In the top of the second, the Cougars got on the board as Jayson Schunk hit a single to left field for two RBIs.
  • In the top of the third, UC Clermont's Cameron Harris singled to drive in Zach Smith to even the ballgame at three.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Gianmarco Concepcion of Penn State Greater Allegheny scored off of a Francisco Del Rio single up the middle to reclaim the lead, 4-3.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Troy Ambros of Penn State Greater Allegheny, singled and then advanced to second on an error which allowed two runs to score to increase the lead to 6-3.  Two batters later, two more Nittany Lions scored on a wild pitch. The very next batter Francisco De Rio singled to right center to drive in Joshua Arroyo to make it 9-3 in favor of the Nittany Lions.
  • UC Clermont Zach Smith scored an unearned run on an error committed by the Nittany Lions to make the score 9-4. Two batters later, Nick King doubled to left center to drive in two UC Clermont Cougars to make the score line 9-6.
  • Penn State Greater Allegheny extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning to 10-6 after Troy Ambros was walked to allow Adam Jacko to score. The Nittany Lions scored their second run of the inning on a fielder's choice which allowed Clay Groff to score and extend the lead to 11-6.
  • In the top of the 7th inning, UC Clermont loaded the bases to make one last run.  Nick Burrus was walked to score Logan Roberts. With the bases still loaded, Nick King scored the final run of the game on an error on the Nittany Lions third basemen to make the score 11-8.
