IN BRIEF: The College of St. Joseph's Vermont advance after defeating the sixth seeded Penn State DuBois 3-2.
HOW THEY SCORED: Penn State DuBois opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. With one out, Lance Pennington walked and advanced to third on a Talon Falls single. USCAA All-American Brandon Gettig singled to knock in the run.
College of St. Joseph's Vermont matched the Lions in stride in the bottom of the first, behind the bats of John Loschiavo and Tyler Kunzmann. Loschiavo led off the inning with a single, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Kunzmann drove him in with an RBI single between third and short.
The Fighting Saints broke the game open in the bottom of the second inning without recording a hit. Derek Edge led off the inning by reaching first on a tough hopper to the shortstop, ruled an error. Nick Rodriguez bunted on the next play and made it to first on an error by the first-baseman, placing runners at first and second. Loschiavo came up to bunt again and reached second on an errant throw by the pitcher, scoring both runs. The Saints would not score again in the ballgame.
Penn State DuBois pulled within one in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Jakob Felix doubled. Josh Sorbera grounded to third, but an error by the first-baseman allowed Sorbera to second and Felix to score, reducing the Saints lead to 3-2.
Penn State DuBois had baserunners in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but were unable to produce another run, giving defending National Championship College of St. Joseph's a trip to the winner's bracket final on Wednesday.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: College of St. Joseph's VT pitcher Russ Krebs went 6 and 1/3 inning, allowing just one earned run, striking out five, and walking two batters. Alex Hart went the distance (6 innings) for Penn State DuBois, allowing only one earned run as well on six hits.
John Loschiavo was the only Saints player with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs. Fighting Saint's catcher Mauricio Rondon was perfect in throwing out Lions attempting to steal in the game.
NEXT UP: College of St. Joseph's VT moves on to the semi-finals of the USCAA Small College World Series and will play the 2015 National Champion, the Apprentice School at 1:00pm EST on Wednesday. Penn State DuBois moves to the elimination bracket and play the winner of Bluefield State College and Cleary University at 9:00am EST on Wednesday.
