IN BRIEF: The Cleary Cougars kept Penn State DuBois off the board as they advanced further into the elimination bracket, keeping their National Championship dreams alive.
HOW THEY SCORED: In the bottom of the second, Mickey Montpas singled to the gap then advanced to second on a wild pitch before he was brought home on a single by William Lovell. Lovell stole second and as the result of a wild pitch moved to third. After a Luke Bunting walk, Nick Hoogerhyde doubled to score Lovell and take a 4-0 advantage through two innings.
Cleary added two more runs in the fourth starting with Briton Ott knocking a double into the gap and advancing to third on a wild pitch. William Lovell brought Ott home on a sac fly to right field. Bunting reached on a single before a Nick Hoogerhyde grounder advanced the runner to second. John Grable went for a base hit and brought Bunting around from second to make it 6-0. Cleary added their final two runs of the game in the 6th when Grable reach on an error by the pitcher and around came Bunting and Hoogerhyde to score who reached on a bunt and an error earlier in the inning.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: Penn State DuBois's six hits all came from different players and Clayton Butler had the lone extra base hit for his team. Kenny Heveryl was on the mound and went three and one thirds inning, giving up six earned runs, two stolen bases, and issuing two strikeouts.
Cleary's Rhett Holwerda went the full seven innings allowing six hits and just one walk and struck out on his 27 batters faced. Hoogerhyde, Grable, and Ott each had a double for their team. Grable had five RBIs and was 2-3 from the plate with a walk and stolen base. Grable now has 10 RBIs in the tournament.
NEXT UP: Cleary lives to fight on for another game in the elimination bracket. The Cougars will face #1 seeded University of Cincinnati Clermont this afternoon, May, 17th, at 4:30pm with a spot in tomorrow morning's semi-final on the line. Penn State DuBois, only a second year program, marked its second tournament appearance with a win over the third seeded Wright State Lakers and finishes the season at 22-14.
